Kiln People

Kiln People is novel written by David Brin and I can't say as though I have read it (and therefore can't recommend it), but the concept of the novel is rather interesting.

Kiln People, is about a society where you can create clay copies of yourself to do various tasks (e.g. mental tasks, dangerous tasks etc.) while you do something else. Then at the end of the day, you download their memories back into you.

So, here is a pretty deep question for this week. If you had 5 copies of yourself to use this week, what would you have them do?

Once you have completed your answer, read and respond to at least 2 peers.

Exploring the Outdoors/Sporting Dreams

Hello my trusty Grade 7's!

This week's blog question came from me watching this 60 Minutes episode on Alex Honnold. As I watched Alex climb, I couldn't figure out if he was crazy, brave or a little bit of both. The one conclusion I did come to is that there is NO WAY I wouldn't even think about attempting it. If you are interested in viewing the 60 minutes interview, it is found below.

The above video led to the next video on three extreme sports. Watch the video and then answer at least one of the following questions:

1. These athletes participate in some unique and extreme sports. If you could undertake any sporting adventure, what would it be and why? Remember, you can go anywhere and do anything!

OR

2. These extreme athletes explore nature, including mountains, rivers, and waterfalls, through their hobbies. Imagine that you could explore anywhere in the world. What kind of lands would you like to explore? How would you like to explore them (e.g. on foot, by bike, via helicopter, etc)? Don't forget to explain why you chose that kind of terrain and transportation.

Three Truths and a Lie

Hello Grade 7's!

As I was sitting here trying to think about a blog question this week, I remembered that I was supposed to do this little "ice-breaker" game with you when I first came.....and I forgot. :-)

So, here it is:

Clearly list four statements about yourself. Three of the statements should be true and one should be made up. These could be places you've been, things you've done, your likes/dislikes, etc. The more creative, the better! Just remember to keep it appropriate for school! Thanks! :-)

After I have approved the comments, you must respond to at least five (5) of your peers by guessing which one of their statements is false.

Acrostic Poem: Fruits and Vegetables

Hello my trusty Grade 7's!

Since we are working on a little mini-unit on poetry, I thought I would throw this little assignment out there that combines health and language.

Select a fruit or vegetable to write an acrostic poem. Each letter of the word should start a line of poetry.

For example:

Always nutritious
Perfectly red
Plump and crisp
Lovely to snack on
Everyone loves apples

Make sure when you type it, each letter has its own line please.

After posting your acrostic poem, read your classmates' poems and vote for your favorite. Post a reply to the student who wrote your favorite poem and explain why you enjoyed it.

Remembrance Day Poems

I am a little late (ok, a lot late) in getting these posted. Some of my students (on their own time) wrote Remembrance Day poems this past month and I would just like to share a couple of them with you here:

Fight For Freedom

It's time to go to war after we say goodbye,
our family hopes we come back alive.

My friend and I are fighting in war,
for our freedom and so much more.

I feel proud to wear this gear,
when i wear it there's nothing I fear.

We hear explosions from far away,
getting closer day by day.

I turn to see you by my side,
you're not there and it's not time to hide.

Then I see you on the ground,
not breathing or making a sound.

I thought to myself, how could this be?
I never thought this would happen to you or me.

I know you didn't want to die,
but now I see you where you lie.

My friend is being lowered into his grave,
even after all he gave.

I can't believe I lost you to war,
It feels like my insides are ripped and tore.

Now you're beneath me in your grave,
I will always remember how you were so brave.

Here in the coffin my friend will rest,
with his arms folded on his chest.

In my memories you will be,
We fought for our country so we could be free.

Dolphin Tale - Finding Inspiration

The movie Dolphin Tale is based on a true story. In fact, Winter, the dolphin in the movie, is the actual dolphin who lost her tail.

I would like you to watch the trailer of the movie and then answer the following questions:

1. How can this story of survival and people coming together to do the impossible inspire you?

2. What is an obstacle in your life that seems impossible? What can you do to try to overcome that obstacle?

Properties of Matter - Plastics

My Grade 5’s are studying “Properties of Matter” right now in science and a nice off-shoot of what we are studying is the use and misuse of plastics. The grade 5’s were shocked (and saddened) at some of the statistics. As a result, we went online and found a few very interesting infographics that help to explain “plastics” and the importance of recycling and using alternative methods.

The infographics are compliments of "The Plastiki".

The Majestic Plastic Bag is a mockumentary video produced by Heal the Bay. The video chronicles the journey of a plastic shopping bag from a store, through a park, and to the ocean. Watch the video below.

This lesson also lead to another interesting conversation about the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch”.

"In the broad expanse of the northern Pacific Ocean, there exists the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre, a slowly moving, clockwise spiral of currents created by a high-pressure system of air currents. The area is an oceanic desert, filled with tiny phytoplankton but few big fish or mammals. Due to its lack of large fish and gentle breezes, fishermen and sailors rarely travel through the gyre. But the area is filled with something besides plankton: trash, millions of pounds of it, most of it plastic. It's the largest landfill in the world, and it floats in the middle of the ocean."

New novel - Everest by Gordon Korman!

For the past week, we have been having fun writing poetry (free verse) in our class. The main premise is the students choose a mixture of two animals and create a poem around this "new" made-up animal. The creative juices have certainly been flowing!

Leadership Debate

I am hoping that you (my ever so brilliant students) have been following the news and know that on May 2nd, Canada is having a federal election. Before an election, the candidates work extremely hard at trying to convince Canadians to vote for him/her. One way to get all of the candidates messages across is to hold a debate and that is exactly what is happening tonight. I hope you tune in, even for just a bit.

I am going to try something new here today and begin a "current events" post - with hopefully more to follow. I found an excellent article from Teaching Kids the News and I would like you to comment/answer questions on it. Look for my annotations as well as others and tell me what you think. By the way, this is an excellent website to keep you up-to-date on all current events. Be sure to check it out in your free time. I guarantee you will read something interesting here.

Earth Hour

Earth hour occurs on March 26th at 8:30 p.m. this year. Why do we do it? Basically because our future depends on it!

Here is a quick blurb from the Earth Hour website:

Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against climate change.

Earth Hour 2011 will take place on Saturday, March 26 at 8:30PM (local time). It will continue to be a call to action to every individual, every business and every community throughout the world. A call to stand up, to take responsibility, to get involved and lead the global journey to a sustainable future.

We need to create the best possible future for Canadians and for the planet, let's stop wasting energy, and generate what we need from clean, renewable sources like wind and solar. Canada can be a world leader in clean energy. But the longer we wait, the more it will cost - both in dollars and environmental impact.

Our school will be participating in Earth Hour on Friday, March 25th from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. We are going to try to do our part - will you?

Glogster Projects!

We have finally finished our Glogster projects and some of them look fantastic! Considering this is the first time we have used the program, everyone did a great job of designing your posters! These are so much better than just regular "paper" posters! Now that you guys are becoming pros, I can't wait to see the next round of posters!

Remember the two aspects of our work that we need to focus on this time are:

1) Putting all of your information into your own words.
2) Not forgetting to add your "bibliography"

Online etiquette

Hello everyone!

Not that I am expecting an issue, but I came across a picture the other week and it made me think of you guys. As a class we do a lot of work online and I just want to remind you about some online etiquette (or netiquette as it is sometimes called).

Here are a few tips from http://www.kidsdomain.com/ Remember that whatever you say online can stay online forever.

Ok...onto the tips.

Sometimes the online world can feel "pretend" because you cannot see the person with whom you are communicating. So, it is very important to remember that you are dealing with "real" people online and you should use your very best manners - just as you would at home or at school.

Do unto others, as you'd have others do unto you. Be polite and courteous at all times. Remember that you're not communicating with a computer screen, but with a human being who has thoughts and feelings just like you. So, always think of the person on the receiving end of your messages.
Remember that the written word is hard to interpret. When you speak to someone, that person can hear the tone of your voice. If they can see you, they can take visual clues from your face and body to better understand your meaning. All of this is lost in text, and sometimes responses can come across as mean or rude, even when you did not intend them this way. This is the reason some people use emoticons (visual clues) in their e-mails, it saves a lot of confusion.
Don't break any laws. When you're on the net, follow the same rules of behavior that you would in real life. Remember, if it is against the law in the real world, it is against the law in cyberspace.

New projects are coming your way!

First of all, a big thank-you to those who voted on the "wiki" project. I am glad that everyone liked working on them and I will definitely do it again this year. It is a great way to compile a lot of research and my goal is to eventually have an online textbook that we can all use. The best part is that I learned a lot from reading them. I love when I can learn along with you. Good job! One thing we definitely need to work on for the next time is completing a proper bibliography and putting the research into your own words. Don't worry - we will get there. : )

Secondly, the Grade 5 glogster project on the 3 R's is up on Edmodo. Check it out and get started as soon as possible. It is due on February 14th! Don't forget to turn it in to me when you are finished. This is also just a gentle reminder for the Grade 6's - Don't forget your "house" project is due on February 11th.

Third and lastly, look for your online science assignments to be coming in the next few days, as well as some of our glogster posters appearing here!

Hello students!

This is just a quick little note to tell you about some of the exciting things we have on tap. Hold onto your hats!

Please note that there are a few new links on the side menu. Get used to the "Edmodo" one and the "Wiki" one. We are going to be focussing on those two quite heavily in the near future.

Edmodo is going to help me achieve my environmental goal of trying to use as little paper as possible this year. So, you will be getting several online assignments in the near future. I will give you some time to complete these assignments in class, but working on them at home is also a big bonus! It has a built in calendar and a reminder tool for when your assignments are due. So, no more excuses about forgetting when assignments are due! ;-)

The second one that we are going to focus heavily on is our class "wiki". Essentially what I would like to achieve here is two-fold. I would like to create a class "online textbook" and I would like for you to create an online "portfolio". So, let me know whenever you would like to add something to your portfolio.

I can't wait to start these (among others) new undertakings with you! Let's put our swimming caps on and dive right in!

We have been learning about how to be "active citizens" in class and hopefully if I get one thing across to you, it is how to be a "good" person and that you can do whatever you would like to do in your life. Never listen to anyone who puts you down and remember that no matter how big or small, YOU can make a difference in this world.

Martin Luther King did just that. He had a dream and I want you to come up with a dream. Dream big!! If there is one thing you could do in this world to change it, what would it be? Be creative.

You must answer this post using "wallwisher" (see below). It is basically an online notice board creator. You have to create a "sticky" note and post it to the board. I would like you to include some text about what your dream for this world would be, as well as a picture that represents your dream. However, you can be creative by adding video, audio, websites, slideshows etc. Feel free to add as many "stickies" as you would like and have fun being creative!

I put up an example to get the ball rolling.

Global Connections Treasure Hunt!

Hello class!

Sorry it has taken me so long to write this blog! However, we are back on track and it is good to be back! :-)

The Global Connections Treasure Hunt has begun (thanks to the "Active Citizens Today" kit). You, as a Global Connections Detective, have one week to find all the global connections in your home. Presently we have 27 push pins on our world map. Let's see how many more we can add! Using the following categories (food, clothing, furniture, music, t.v. shows, books/magazines, kitchen equipment/appliances, pictures, radio/computer/t.v., toys/games, or other), find at least 10 things in your house from another country and then write here at least TWO of your most surprising finds. Go for 15, go for 20. Go crazy finding all the Global Connections in your home. Look at labels on food, packages, clothing and other products. Some things will be a bit trickier (like furniture and appliances) so you might have to ask someone else in your family. You can have more than one item under each category, but aim to find items from at least 5 different categories. Have fun going global in your home!

Your second task this week is to tell me whether or not you achieved your December goal(s)!

So, to summarize:

1. Tell me at least TWO of your most surprising finds with respect to the treasure hunt.

2. Tell me whether or not you achieved your goal(s) for December. If you didn't, please elaborate and tell me why.

It's time for some new goals!

Hello class!

Now that you have seen your Term #1 report cards, it is time to sit back and reflect on how well you did. There are several questions that you should be asking yourself. Are you happy with how the term went? Did you work to your full potential? Could you do better? Do you want to do better? Did you achieve this term's goals? If not, what could you have done differently? Hopefully, your response to most of these questions is a resounding "yes". However, even if you did answer "yes", it doesn't mean that you can't improve in some capacity and that is where this week's question comes into play.

Goal setting is a powerful process for thinking about your future. Not just for your future here in Grade 4 or 5, but in your entire school career as well as continuing onto your adult life. It is an excellent habit/skill to try and master. By setting goals you will be able to decide where you would like to go in life and have complete control on how to get there. By knowing precisely what you want to achieve, you will always know where you have to concentrate your efforts. You'll also quickly spot the distractions that would otherwise lure you from your course. More than this, properly-set goals can be incredibly motivating, and as you get into the habit of setting and achieving goals, you'll find that your self-confidence builds fast and that is always a good thing! :-)

So, your goal this week is to set a few goals. You see what I did there? :-) Unlike in class, these goals do not have to be classroom related. Your goal(s) can be classroom related, sports related, family related etc. There are no set limits here except for one small tidbit. You must be able to accomplish your goal by the end of December.

Remember:

In order for something to be a goal:

It has to be important to you, personally.
It has to be within your power to make it happen through your own actions.
It has to be something you have a reasonable chance of achieving.
It must be clearly defined and have a specific plan of action.

To summarize:

1. Tell me here what your goal(s) for the next month and a half will be. (re-read the above list over again to make sure your goal is a good one!)

2. Accomplish your goal by the end of December.

3. Provide me with updates as you go or if you need help achieving it.

4. Have fun and start over-achieving! :-)

Random Acts of Kindness

Hello everyone!

Sorry about the two week delay! However, we are back on track this week!

The theme this week is "kindness". Kindness is one of the most powerful interpersonal tools that we, as human beings, use to connect with one another. When we sense someone’s need, we either choose to help in some way… or we choose not to. I want everyone this week to bring out their inner-kindness and choose to help!

We cannot rely on someone else to make this world a better place. Each one of us has to do our bit. It doesn't matter if it is big or small, we should all make it a habit to make someone's day, every day. Kindness is contagious. Never underestimate the impact of a single act of kindness.

Your mission this week is to complete AT LEAST one "random act of kindness".

What is a Random Act of Kindness? (taken from http://actsofkindness.org/)

When we go beyond duties that are expected of us and reach out to help another person or group of people, we are performing a Random Act of Kindness. Kindness and empathy are very closely related: kindness is the observable expression of empathy. We sense another person’s need, we understand how it feels to be in need (due to our own past experience), and we decide to offer our help. This profound process can happen almost instantaneously, even if the person in need is a complete stranger. When we are kind, we express the best of who we are.

An Explanation of “Random”

The word “random” can be interpreted in various ways. Almost all acts of kindness are planned to some extent. Sometimes the planning takes a couple of seconds. Other times, the planning can take weeks. All acts of kindness — planned and unplanned — are valuable and beneficial. When people are kind, they are improving their world by selflessly giving to another.

Hopefully the definitions are clear. If you still have a question, please feel free to ask it here on the blog.

Before we get started, we have to set a few rules - I know, it's always about the rules! Don't worry, these aren't difficult rules! :-)

Rule #1: You must complete your act of kindness without being asked. It has to be completely random and done because YOU wanted to do it not because someone asked you to do it.

Rule #2: You must complete your act without expecting anything in return.

Rule #3: Do not tell the person that you have done your random act of kindness because it is an assignment given to you by me.

Rule #4: Post here what your "random act of kindness" was and how the person reacted to you because of this unexpected kindness.

Rule #5: Watch your spelling and grammar and always post using full sentences!

Rule #6: Have fun and be creative!

Let's see how many random acts of kindness we can achieve in one week! Good luck! :-)

Well.....we complete week #2!

I just wanted to say a quick "thank-you" to all of my fantastic students for a great first week of blogging! Wow - 109 posts!! Pretty impressive if I do say so myself! We had a few little bumps along the way, but we are definitely moving in the right direction and that has got me (and hopefully you) pretty excited!

I will try and keep my rambling to the bare minimum this week. So without further adieu, here are this week's questions:

1. What does it mean to you to be a "caring" person?

2. Other than Greg Mortensen (the author of "Three Cups of Tea"), research someone in history who has dedicated his or her life to helping others. Write about when he or she lived and provide some examples of how they improved the world through his or her dedication.

Hello Grade 4/5's!

I hope and trust that everyone had a great weekend!

As you know, we are reading the novel "Three Cups of Tea" in class. Just to refresh your memory, here is a brief outline of what the book is about:

While attempting to climb K2, the world's second highest mountain peak, Greg Mortenson suddenly found himself lost, alone and freezing cold. He began to climb to honour his sister, who had passed away. Now his own life was in peril. Luckily, Greg was nursed back to health by the people of Korphe, a poor village in northern Pakistan. Deeply moved by the Korphe community's kindness and generosity, he promised to build a school for the village. Greg's efforts to keep his promise led to deep friendships with people from Pakistan and other Central Asian countries and to the discovery of his life's great purpose: the formation of the Central Asia Institute and the building of not one but many schools.

My first question has three parts to it and it revolves around this touching novel. Are your thinking caps on?

3. If you wanted to honour someone special to you, what would you most like to accomplish and for whom?

Welcome to our brand new blog here at the wolf den!

I hope and trust that you have had a great summer and have come back to school refreshed and pumped to get those brains working again!

I have got quite a few "cool" things planned this year and one of them is this blog. Every week I am going to be providing a question to you that you must answer within the week. You may answer them here at school or at home. It is your choice. However, your answers must always be appropriate for school, use all of the proper conventions to the best of your ability and eventually follow the "better answers" formula. Don't worry about this right now, you will learn all about this formula as the year progresses.

The questions will vary from the silly, to the creative, to the head scratchers. So let's put our thinking caps on and get started!
