The Marshmallow Test

It could be argued that our culture is now being fuelled by immediate gratification.  When we want something, we want it now and more often than not, our wish is granted.  For example, if we don't know something, we can look it up on-line and usually have the answer within seconds.  Like a song you heard on the radio?  You can easily download the song within minutes.  If you are hungry and don't have the "time" to make something, any number of fast food restaurants are more than happy to cook you dinner in a record amount of time.

Watch the video below and answer the following questions:

- What are some other examples of people being unable or unwilling to wait?
-  Is this a positive move in the right direction, or a negative one?
-  Describe what is going through one of the kid's mind as (s)he tries to resist the temptation to eat the marshmallow.

Once you have posted your response, read the responses posted by your peers and reply thoughtfully to at least two other students.  Compliment strong points, make connections, ask questions and build on ideas shared!

  1. 1. somethings that i think people can't wait for are to eat dinner and they go to the snacks and have a snack, and another one is a phone call like if you r waiting to get a call for a job you would be really exited.
    2. i think this is in a positive direction because it shows a test on if you wait you will get more so it will benefit but if you eat it now then you wont get another one its done.
    3. what i think is going through the kids mine is he really want to eat it but they know that if they wait they will have 2 marshmallows and they would eat more and have 2 but also what would be going through there mind is it smells really good and you really really want to eat it.

  3. Another thing people are unwilling to wait is watch tv.
I beleive that it is a very positive move if we use it reasonably.
One thing he or she is thinking is how long he has to wait untill he gets the other marshmellow.

  5. 1)some examples are that the kids were taking little bites, kissing it, feeling it and smelling it.

2)I think that it is normal to not wait because the marshmellow would look and smell so good and you would want another one so you would just be sitting there staring at it.

3)What was going threw one of the kids head was if i wait then i can eat more later but if i eat it now then i wont get anymore.

    1. Whenever there is something like a roller coaster and people would not like to wait in line.
    2. The right direction because this would be good for increasing the patience of the next generation.
    3. This is what would be in the kids' mind: "I don't need it, I need it, I don't need it" etc. The kids would be debating themselves to eat it or not.

  7. If you see something in the mall and you have enough money to buy it and you really want it you will most likely buy it and not save your money. I do not think this is a positive move and it will be the death of man kind in the future. I think the kid is thinking should I or should I not and is waiting with anticipation.

  8. 1. some examples are if people really want to have something is like if you are waiting for a phone call that you have been waiting for if you are going on vacation and your flight is delayed you would be pretty excited.
2.i think that this is a positive move in the right direction because they are testing you that if you don't eat it then you'll get more than you already have but if you do eat the marshmellow you do not get anything after.
    3. what is going through a boys mind is that he shouldn't eat because he will get more after but he really wants it because its something sweet and sugary like a treat which he probably doesn't get that often for just waiting.

    1. Some things that people can't wait for are, summer, waiting for their food in a restaurants.
    2. I think that it's a positive direction because if you wait for something you really want, it'll turn out better than you expected.
    3. I think that they're thinking how much they want to eat the marshmallow, but want 2. :$

  10. 1.an example of when you can't wait is when you are going to someone's house and they aren't there yet so you go there by yourself. Or when your at the hospital and your waiting forever and you can;t wait any more and your just going mad with bordom.
    2. I think this is a bad thing and it's a step backwords because people could get lazzy.
3.i chose the realy small red headed girl. She ate the marshmello rite away before the lady even left the room. I think what was going threw her mind is "are you kiding me, i have things to do and places to go. i don't have time to wait here for you to come back just for two stinking marshmellos, i'm eating it now!" rather that or she didn't understand the consept.

people can't wait for food, celebrations and maybe apps or electronics
This is not a positive step in the right direction because we are becoming impatient

one example is the commercial about finger cooking for BP. this is a positive step because it teaches us that if we wait good things will come our way.
i liked the kid who ate it as soon as she left.

  15. 1) Usually people can't wait for, summer, the end of school & such ;$
    2) I don't think this is positive because, people & especially kids are becoming more & more impatient.
    3) The kid is probably feeling, like, desperate because he wants that marshmallow, but he also wants to wait for the second one$:

  16. Waiting for someone to come and the time seems like hours.

I think it's positive because it's testing kid's willingness to wait for the lady to come back and give them the other marshmallow.

The kid is obviously in distress because he want's that marshmallow but he wants the second one too.

  17. 1. Some examples of people being unable to wait are : When I was at the music festival I had to sit at the front to wait to go on for my turn, I got very impatient waiting.
2.I think it is not positive because people are learning to grow up like this and it is not helping them further along in life. 1. i think that people are unwilling to wait for music. if you listen to the raido you have to wait for commericals and other things, but if you just download it on your i-phone you can listen to it when ever you want.

i think that this is taking a turn for the worse because people now a day are to impaitent to wait for what they want.

i think that the kid is thinking that at first the kid is thinking if i wait 2 minutes then i will get another one, but sitting infront of it can get pretty tempting.
