Get Caught Up/Your Choice

This week is going to be a get caught up week on your blog and if you are completely caught up, you may write about whatever you would like (as long as it is appropriate for school). Don't forget to include a picture or a video in your post.

Once you have posted your blog post, read the responses posted by your peers and reply thoughtfully to at least five (5) other students. Compliment strong points, make connections, ask questions and build on ideas shared!

As always, I look forward to reading your responses!

Making Learning Come to Life!

Watch the following video:

This dinosaur visit is a great way to get kids excited to learn about dinosaurs!

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Now answer the following questions (be creative, but keep it realistic please)

1.  What would make learning fun for you?

2.  Think about one of the subjects you are currently studying (Interactions within Ecosystems/Biodiversity, New France/Communities in Canada's Past and Present, Math, and Language: Point of View/Making an Impression).  Brainstorm 3 different projects, classroom activities or special guests that would make school come alive for you.

Remember the rules for posting information to the web:

- NEVER post any personal information and use only first names please.
-  Put the question in your answer and always write using full sentences.
- Proofread your work (watch your spelling and grammar) before you post it.
- Keep it appropriate for school. - Don't forget to include a picture or a video in your post!
- Have fun and be creative!

I'm looking forward to reading your answers and don't forget to take the time and comment on a few other blogs.

This Week's Blogging Tasks

Hello my trusty grade 6/7s!

You have three blogging tasks this week:

1. If you haven't finished your writing piece on whether or not we should be judged on our appearance - that should be your first priority.

2. Complete this week's blog question: If you could have dinner with three famous people (and I am using the term "famous" pretty loosely here) dead or alive, who would they be and why? What restaurant would you take them to? Make sure you develop your answer before you publish to the web.

It could be a scientist that you've read about, a humanitarian, an obscure musician, or a little-known poet. Do some research and put a lot of thought into this. I am really curious to know who you come up with and I can't wait to read your responses.

Don't forget to include pictures and perhaps a good video if you come across one.

3. Your final task this week is to comment on at least five (5) different student's blogs.

Biodiversity Quiz

Welcome to your first online assignment Grade 6's!

Feel free to use any resource you would like to find the answer. However, you must work by yourself. Take your time and read the questions carefully. I want to try and eliminate all silly mistakes. :-)

I've tried to make things a little easier by embedded the quiz right into the blog. However, if you would like to see a full-screen version, just click this link.

Good luck!

Dolphin Tale - Finding Inspiration

The movie Dolphin Tale is based on a true story.  In fact, Winter, the dolphin in the movie, is the actual dolphin who lost her tail.

I would like you to watch the trailer of the movie and then answer the following questions:

1.  How can this story of survival and people coming together to do the impossible inspire you?

2.  What is an obstacle in your life that seems impossible? What can you do to try to overcome that obstacle?

3.  As you can see from Dolphin Tale, they have to reach out to others and ask for help to make their goal a reality.  Who can you ask for help?

Or please visit the official site for the movie here: Dolphin Tale

I am looking forward to hearing your responses!

2. Proofread your good copy one last time BEFORE publishing to the web.

3. Include a picture (don't forget to give credit to the site where you got the picture) and an embedded video (if you can find one) in your blog post. If you are unsure of how to embed a video, please see me or watch the video below.

I am looking forward to seeing and reading everyone's finished product!

The Ideal Human Being

Your task this week is to write a description of  the ideal human being. The individual with the finest set of attributes (personality traits), attitudes, life aspirations, and personal values. When you have completed that, compare that "ideal" human being to you. What do you have in common? What are you still working on?

Remember the rules for posting information to the web:

- NEVER post any personal information and use only first names please.
-  Put the question in your answer and always write using full sentences.
- Proofread your work (watch your spelling and grammar) before you post it.

Future You

Think about what you will be doing in twenty years. Give me as many details as you can.

For example:

Where will you be living?
What will you be doing for a living?
What kind of car will you be driving?
What kind of house will you be living in?
Will you want to be married or still single?

And so on...

Please take your time and write thoughtfully. Don't forget about organizing your paragraphs and to double-check your spelling and grammar.

Once you have posted your response, read the responses posted by your peers and reply thoughtfully to at least two other students.  Compliment strong points, make connections, ask questions and build on ideas shared!

150 Word Story

I have enjoyed reading everyone's 100 word story so much that I have decided to do a part 2! However, this time you may use 150 words. Again...not 149. Not 151.  One hundred and fifty exactly.  :-)

What is happening/happened in this picture?

Make sure you study the picture closely and let your imagination run wild!  Be as creative as you can and don't forget to include the picture in your post! I look forward to reading what you come up with and make sure you check your spelling and grammar before you publish it!

Once this has been completed and posted on your blog, read and respond to at least 3 other people’s posts.

Turning Off The Television

Here is this week's topic for your blog:

Would you give up television for a year if it meant you would get straight A's?

If you vote "yes," explain why you think this sacrifice would be worthwhile. What do you watch on television that you would miss most? How would earning straight A's positively impact your life?

If you vote "no," explain why you would not sacrifice television for straight A's. Why wouldn't straight A's motivate you to turn off the television? Why is television an important part of your life? Is there something else you would sacrifice for better grades?

Once you have posted your well thought out response, you will read and reply to the responses posted by your peers the following computer period. Comment thoughtfully on at least 2 other members of the class. Compliment strong points made, ask questions, and build on ideas shared.

Remember the rules for posting information to the web:

NEVER post any personal information and use only first names please.
-  Put the question in your answer and always write using full sentences and paragraphs. Feel free to add a picture (a creative commons one) or a video to enhance your blog post.
- Proofread your work (watch your spelling and grammar) before you post it.
- Keep it appropriate for school.
- Have fun and be creative!

As always, I am looking forward to reading your answers!

Role Models?

Many athletes and celebrities fall into the category of role models, regardless if they choose to be or not and I find this to be an extremely interesting topic.  Watch the Lebron James commercial below and answer the following questions:

1. Do you think that celebrities/athletes make good role models?
2. Do you look up to any celebrities/athletes?  If so, tell me why.  If not, tell me why.  :-)
3. Do you think they should assume the responsibility of acting as a role model to young kids, regardless if they want to or not?

*cough..cough*  Don't forget to put the question in your answer! :-)

Once you have posted your response, read the responses posted by your peers and reply thoughtfully to at least two other students.  Compliment strong points, make connections, ask questions and build on ideas shared!

Mr. Boettger  :-)

- I am really looking forward to reading your responses and opinions on this one.

Favourite Novel

It is almost the end of the year and I am looking for some feedback.  I read six (!) novels to you this year - and I would like to know which one was your favourite.

This week's task is as follows:

1.  Vote on which book you liked the most.  Not what your friends liked - YOU.
2.  In the comments section, tell me the novel you chose and why you liked it the most.   Then give me your favourite part or least favourite part from that novel.

Thanks for your feedback.  I appreciate it.

Glogster

I am excited about the next set of projects that we are going to be working on in class over the next few weeks!  The first project (which you will receive in the next day or two) that you will be working on is designing an interactive poster using a program called Glogster.

I have included a few tutorials below to get you started.  I can't wait to see what everyone comes up with!

The Fun Theory

The Fun Theory is a Volkswagen initiative and it is dedicated to the thought that something as simple as fun is the easiest way to change people's behaviour for the better. What do you think?

Watch the following videos and then answer this week's blog question:

Find the fun:

Now it's your turn to try the fun theory. Choose a task that is typically boring and make it fun! Describe why your game or "angle" on the chore is more entertaining.

Good luck!
